DIY vs. Custom Booth Design: When to Spend What
Most first-time exhibitors think they can design their own booth. Some can. Most produce something that costs them at every show. Here's the practical line between DIY and pro design.
What DIY booth design looks like
DIY booth design typically means an in-house marketing person or designer takes existing brand assets and produces booth graphics in Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. For straightforward 10ft booths with strong brand systems in place — clear logo, defined color palette, established typography — this can work fine. The booth ends up looking exactly like the rest of your brand materials, which is usually what you want.
DIY design starts to break down when the brand system isn't fully defined, when the booth needs to do something the existing brand materials don't (large-format hero imagery, specific tradeshow CTAs, multi-message content density), or when the designer doesn't understand tradeshow-specific constraints (legibility from 30 feet, bleed and trim margins, print-on-fabric color shift).
What custom booth design costs
Custom booth design from a tradeshow-specialized designer runs $400–$1,800 for a 10ft booth, $800–$3,500 for a 10×20. Most reputable display vendors include design within the booth price or as a low-cost add-on. The output is a print-ready booth artwork file plus typically a mockup rendering so you can see the booth before producing it.
Where the custom design fee earns back: legibility (your booth reads from across the aisle), brand consistency (the booth feels intentional, not improvised), and avoiding reprint cost (a $1,200 design fee is cheap insurance against a $3,000 reprint).
The hybrid approach
Many exhibitors find a middle path: provide existing brand assets and a rough layout sketch to a custom designer who polishes the final booth artwork. This typically runs $300–$700 versus $1,000+ for full custom design and captures most of the upside. We offer this option as our standard design service on any booth purchase.
